Quick Guide to Using E-Bikes

Lowe Driver Hub · Mubea eCargo · Rider essentials

Start, unlock, reverse and secure your bike.

A quick reminder for our fleet’s eCargo bikes. Read while safely stopped and use alongside your practical induction.

← All bike safety guides
ALWAYS look around the bike when reversing. DO NOT use the mirrors to judge whether the space is clear.

The cargo box creates blind spots. Turn and check directly behind and beside the bike before moving, and keep checking as you reverse. If you cannot confirm the whole path is clear, stop and get assistance.

01 · Turn on and enter your PIN

  1. With the bike stationary, hold the power button until the screen turns on.
  2. Use the PIN issued by your manager. Use the buttons below to enter it.
  3. When the full PIN is entered, press i to confirm and unlock.
+
Increase the selected number.
−
Decrease the selected number.
Light button
Move right to the next digit.
Power button
Move left to the previous digit.

Keep your PIN private. If you have not been issued a PIN or the display differs, ask your manager before moving.

02 · Reverse slowly, with hazards on

  1. Stop and look directly all around the bike, including behind the cargo box and beside the wheels.
  2. Switch on the hazard lights before reversing. The hazard control is on the left of the handlebars.
  3. Use the reversing method demonstrated in your fleet induction. Keep the hazards on and keep checking your surroundings throughout the manoeuvre.
  4. Stop immediately if someone enters your path, your view is obstructed or you cannot judge the clearance.

Hold-to-move assistance · our new Mubea fleet

Hold −
Automatic reverse at approximately 3 mph.
Hold +
Automatic forward movement at approximately 3 mph.
Release
Release the held button to stop the powered movement. Keep the brakes ready to bring the bike to a complete stop.

You must keep holding the button for the bike to move. Use this only with the path clear, with hazards on for reversing, and keep looking directly around the bike.

These controls have been confirmed by the fleet operator for our new bikes. Before first use, have your trainer demonstrate both directions and stopping in a clear, controlled area. If the controls or displayed speed differ, stop and ask your manager; do not guess.

Do not use the mirrors as your reversing view. They do not show the full area around the bike. Never reverse into space you cannot confirm is clear.

03 · Know your two fobs

Blue fob
Locks and unlocks the bike. Hold it just behind the speedometer screen.
Black fob
Opens the rear cargo doors.
Not sitting on the seat? The bike must be locked.

Do this at every delivery stop, even if you will only be away for a moment.

  1. Bring the bike to a complete stop and engage PARK. Check the displayed mode.
  2. Turn the bike off before stepping away.
  3. Hold the blue fob just behind the speedometer screen and check that the bike has locked.
  4. To unlock, hold the blue fob in the same position again and check that it has unlocked.

Use the black fob to open the rear doors. Close and secure the doors before moving, then look all around before setting off.

04 · Batteries: fit and lock in the morning, remove and charge at the end of the day

Each morning: fit, then lock

When you put the batteries into the bike each morning, fully seat each one and lock it securely in place before loading or setting off.

  • Lock every battery individually when you fit it, including after a battery change.
  • If a battery will not lock securely, keep the bike parked and report it to your manager.
  • Complete the required daily bike inspection in ClearQuote before your shift.
Fleet requirement

Failure to lock the batteries in place could lead to no further offers of work in future.

At the end of your day: return, switch off, remove and charge

The bike must be returned to the unit or site and remains on site overnight.

  1. When returning the bike to the unit or site, park safely and hold the power button until the bike is fully switched off.
  2. Unlock the batteries and remove them from the bike using the process shown in your induction.
  3. Put the removed batteries on charge in the designated charging area, using the approved chargers and site charging procedure.
  4. Put your issued devices on charge.
  5. Return the keys to the locker before leaving.

Do not leave the batteries fitted in the bike at the end of the day instead of removing them for charging. Report any battery or charging fault to your manager.

05 · Use energy wisely and slow down safely

Powered manoeuvring is for short, slow movements

Use the hold-to-move assistance only where pedalling is awkward or unsuitable for a slow manoeuvre. Use normal pedalling for ordinary riding. Unnecessary powered manoeuvring uses more battery, so keep it brief.

Back-pedalling for gentle slowing

In normal forward riding on this fleet, back-pedalling activates regenerative braking: gentle slowing that recovers energy and can help extend range. Have your trainer demonstrate this, including how it differs from reversing with hazards on.

Keep the brake levers ready and use them whenever needed to control speed or stop safely. Regenerative slowing is not a replacement for the brakes. Never delay braking to save battery or make setting off easier.

Anticipate stops, leave space and slow down smoothly. Safety takes priority over energy use.

06 · How to ride a bike safely

Ride forwards wherever it is safe and practical. Reverse only when you need to manoeuvre — do not use reversing as your normal way of moving between stops.

  • Plan where you will stop and how you will leave. Choose a position that lets you move forwards again where possible.
  • Before moving off, turning or changing position, look all around, check for pedestrians and traffic, and make your intentions clear.
  • Ride at a controlled speed, leave stopping space and take bends slowly. Allow for the width of the PACK and its cargo box.
  • Use normal pedalling for ordinary riding. Hold-to-move assistance is only for short, slow manoeuvres where pedalling is awkward; it uses more battery.
  • If reversing is unavoidable: stop, look directly around the bike, switch on hazards and reverse slowly for only the distance needed. Do not rely on the mirrors. Stop if you cannot confirm the full path is clear.
  • Keep both brake levers ready. Use the brakes whenever you need them to control speed or stop; battery saving must never delay safe braking.

Accident reporting · report all damage

Always notify your Site Manager or the fleet team of all damage, no matter how small.

This includes a scratch, a small knock, damage to the bike, another vehicle, a building or other property. Do not decide that it is too minor to report.

  1. Stop safely and check for danger or injuries. Get yourself and others to safety where possible. Call 999 for serious injury or immediate danger.
  2. Notify your Site Manager or the fleet team straight away. Give your exact location, the time, your bike or vehicle identifier and a factual account of what happened.
  3. Collect the third party’s full name and contact telephone number. For a vehicle, record its registration number and the driver’s name and address. For a house or other property, record the full property address and the owner or occupier’s name and telephone number where available.
  4. Record the scene and all damage when safe. Take clear photos of the damage, vehicle registration or property, and the wider location. Note any witnesses and their contact details if they agree.
  5. Send the details and photos through the fleet’s incident-reporting process. The team needs them to report the incident to the insurance teams. Share personal details only through the approved company channel.
  6. If details are unavailable, report that too. Do not guess or leave the incident unreported. Tell the manager what is missing and follow their instructions.

Do not continue riding if the bike may be unsafe. Follow the fleet team’s inspection or recovery instructions before returning it to service.
