Cargo Bike Road Positioning

Mubea eCargo · Bike Safety Guides

Plan for the whole bike, not just the front wheels.

Wear your hi-vis on the road, every time.

Use your indicators when turning to alert traffic. Keep looking and checking—an indicator does not give you priority.

Obey road signs and traffic lights

Follow traffic regulations, one-way restrictions and traffic lights. Where there is no suitable cycle lane, stay behind traffic rather than trying to force the bike through gaps. Never assume another road user has seen you or will give way.

Choose a suitable route

Check access, width restrictions, barriers, surfaces and turning space. A route that fits a conventional bicycle may not fit a cargo bike. Follow signs and local access rules.

Leave room to react

  • Look well ahead and keep space from traffic and pedestrians.
  • Avoid squeezing beside large vehicles where the driver may not see you.
  • Leave room beside parked vehicles for opening doors.
  • Check behind before changing position. Use the indicators when turning and only move when it is safe.
  • Approach junctions ready to stop; make sure others have seen you.

At narrow sections

Do not let pressure from traffic push you into an unsafe gap. Do not try to fit the bike into a space that looks tight. If unsure, stop safely, park and lock the bike, get out and check. If you cannot pass with adequate clearance, choose another route or ask for support. Read the parking and locking steps.

Keep attention on riding

Set navigation before departure. Park safely before reading messages, scanning parcels or changing your delivery app. Never ride onto a pavement unless it is a permitted cycle route.

Take the space and time you need.

Delivery targets never justify rushing a junction or passing where you cannot see clearly.
