AVD: age-verified deliveries
Check the person. Complete the age checks. Only then hand over.

An AVD requires a suitable adult recipient and the app’s age-verification process. A photo, safe-place instruction or OTP does not replace it.
What is an AVD?
AVD means age-verified delivery: the app identifies a parcel that needs an age check before it can be handed over. This can include age-restricted products. For the Amazon UK process described here, the recipient must be 18 or over.
Challenge 25 is the ID-check threshold, not the minimum delivery age. A recipient aged 18–24 can qualify, but must provide acceptable ID when the app or their apparent age requires it. Never decide the required process from the parcel’s size, packaging or what the customer says is inside.
At the stop: follow this order
- Stop safely and select the correct parcel. Match the address and shipment, read its instructions and identify every verification prompt. Check separate parcels individually.
- Meet the person receiving it. Keep control of the parcel while you explain the check. Do not hand it over first and try to complete verification afterwards.
- Follow the age prompts. Amazon’s UK guidance describes asking for the recipient’s year of birth and entering it in the app. Use the actual information provided; never invent a year to reach the next screen.
- Check acceptable ID when required. Ask if the app requires it or the recipient is, or appears to be, under 25. Check that the photograph and date of birth relate to the person in front of you.
- Wait for app confirmation. Enter only the requested information. Complete any other checks on that shipment, including an OTP if requested.
- Hand over and record the actual outcome. Only release the parcel once the required checks are complete. Confirm the delivery has saved before moving on.
Vehicle type does not change the recipient checks. Park and secure the vehicle using your fleet’s procedure before approaching the stop.
Challenge 25 and acceptable ID
Use the current app and official training to decide which documents are accepted. Amazon’s public driver guidance lists passports, driving licences, government-issued ID cards and Ministry of Defence Form 90 cards. Check the document itself and the person presenting it; do not treat a date spoken aloud as an ID check.
- Use the date shown on the accepted document when the app asks for it.
- Never scan, photograph or retain a copy of customer ID. Do not send it to a manager or place it in a chat.
- If the document, photograph or age cannot be verified, pause the handover and seek approved support. Do not guess or accuse the customer.
- Keep the conversation discreet. Collect no extra identity information beyond the process.
App screens and accepted-document rules can change. Current app instructions and your fleet’s approved training take priority over an old screenshot or a remembered workaround.
Concierge, reception and business deliveries
A concierge, receptionist or member of staff at a business can accept an AVD on behalf of the customer at the correct delivery address. Complete the age-verification process with the person actually receiving the parcel, including acceptable ID when required. They must be 18 or over.
Record the handover accurately. Select the correct reception / receptionist or other applicable delivery option offered by the app, and enter the actual recipient’s name or role where requested. Do not mark it as handed to the named customer if someone else accepted it. Do not leave it unattended on a desk or shelf.
If the shipment has an additional restriction or an OTP, complete that requirement too. If the app does not support the actual handover, contact Driver Support before releasing the parcel.
When you cannot complete verification
Keep the parcel with you. Use the truthful unsuccessful-delivery reason in the app and the approved contact/support process. Tell your Site Manager about the blocker and follow your site’s reattempt and return instructions.
- Recipient is under 18, or required age/ID information is refused: do not hand over.
- No suitable recipient or required ID unavailable: do not leave the parcel unattended or with a neighbour.
- App error, conflicting instructions or an unclear result: do not mark it delivered just to close the stop.
- Hostility or an unsafe situation: step away safely, avoid an argument and contact your Site Manager / Driver Support.
A customer’s safe-place note cannot override an AVD. A concierge, receptionist or business staff member at the correct address may accept on the customer’s behalf after the required age checks. Hand it to that person and record the actual recipient and delivery location correctly; never leave it unattended.

Common situations
The customer looks 20 and says “I’m definitely old enough”.
Ask for acceptable ID. Being 18+ is necessary, but their assurance does not replace a required Challenge 25 check.
The recipient looks older than 25.
Still follow every app prompt. Do not skip the year-of-birth or any requested ID step simply because the person looks older.
The customer asks you to leave it with a neighbour.
Do not use a neighbour as an AVD alternative. Keep the parcel and follow the app’s unsuccessful-delivery and support process.
A concierge says “leave it here; we accept everything”.
A concierge, receptionist or business staff member can accept at the correct delivery address on behalf of the customer. Complete the age checks with that person, hand the parcel directly to them and select the appropriate reception / recipient option in the app. Record their name or role where requested. A building arrangement does not waive age checks or any additional shipment restriction.
The same parcel asks for an OTP too.
Both checks must be completed. A valid passcode does not prove age, and ID does not replace the passcode. Read the OTP and high-value guide.
A simple way to explain the check
“This parcel needs an age check before I can hand it over. Please bear with me while I follow the app. If ID is required, I’ll check it, but I won’t photograph or keep a copy.”
Before moving on
- Correct parcel and address checked.
- Eligible recipient and every required check completed.
- No ID image saved and no invented details entered.
- The app reflects the real handover or unsuccessful outcome.
