General Distraction

๐Ÿ•’ 3 min read

What is General Distraction?

General Distraction is a safety event generated when Samsara AI detects that a driver’s attention has been diverted away from the road for an unsafe period whilst the vehicle is in motion.

Distractions can significantly reduce your awareness of changing road conditions, increase your reaction time, and raise the risk of a collision.

Drivers are expected to remain alert and focused on the road at all times.

How is it Measured?

Samsara AI continuously analyses the driver-facing camera throughout your journey.

A General Distraction event may be generated if the AI detects that your eyes or attention are directed away from the road for longer than is considered safe.

To avoid General Distraction events, you should:

  • Keep your eyes on the road whenever the vehicle is moving.

  • Avoid looking away for more than a brief glance.

  • Minimise unnecessary distractions inside the vehicle.

  • Plan your route and vehicle setup before setting off.

  • Stay fully focused on driving throughout your journey.

Target

To achieve Fantastic performance, you should aim for:

0 General Distraction Events

Every journey should be completed whilst maintaining full attention on the road ahead.

How the AI Detects It

Samsara AI analyses footage from the driver-facing camera using artificial intelligence.

The system may identify:

  • Your eyes looking away from the road for an extended period.

  • Your head turning away from the direction of travel.

  • Repeated glances towards objects inside the vehicle.

  • Behaviour indicating your attention is no longer focused on driving.

The AI assesses driver attention continuously and automatically records qualifying safety events.

What Causes It?

General Distraction events are commonly caused by:

  • Looking for parcels whilst driving.

  • Searching for items inside the cab.

  • Adjusting vehicle controls for too long.

  • Looking at paperwork or delivery information.

  • Turning to speak to a passenger.

  • Looking out of side windows for extended periods.

  • Eating or drinking whilst your attention leaves the road.

Even a few seconds of distraction can dramatically increase stopping distance and reduce your ability to react to hazards.

Best Practice

To consistently avoid General Distraction events:

  • Organise your parcels before leaving each stop.

  • Adjust mirrors, heating and navigation before moving off.

  • Only make quick, necessary glances at mirrors or instruments.

  • Pull over safely if you need to search for an item or read information.

  • Keep your primary focus on the road at all times.

  • Avoid unnecessary activities whilst the vehicle is moving.

Real-World Examples

Examples of General Distraction include:

  • Looking down for several seconds to find the next parcel.

  • Searching through paperwork whilst driving.

  • Reaching into the passenger footwell for an item.

  • Turning around to look into the rear of the van.

  • Looking at a delivery device for too long.

  • Becoming distracted by objects inside the vehicle instead of watching the road.

These behaviours reduce your awareness of hazards and increase the likelihood of a collision.

Can This Be Challenged?

Some safety events may be reviewed if they have been recorded incorrectly.

Examples may include:

  • The AI incorrectly interprets a normal driving movement as a distraction.

  • Road conditions require a temporary change in head position.

  • Camera visibility is temporarily affected.

  • The recorded footage does not accurately reflect the event.

If you believe a General Distraction event has been recorded incorrectly, report it to your manager as soon as possible.

Not every event can be overturned, but genuine false positives may be investigated.
